A Day in Flooded Sukkur by Mustafa Mohsin

This account has been posted by PakUSonline reporter/photographer Mustafa Mohsin.  These photographs were taken exclusively for PakUSonline.com

"With the rescue work pretty much completed in northern Sindh, I recently visited Sukkur to see first-hand the immediate flood aftermath. Though still difficult to visit the affected areas by car, one may get a sense of the vast inundated lands in a boat. The water level is staggering. In addition to the human misery, the floods have devastated the ecology of the lands.

"From livestock to ants - the anguish is rampant. On the relief side, I was happy to observe the good work of the armed forces, NGOs (including USAID and UNHCR) and other organizations that were managing relief camps scattered all over town. However, more were needed as hundreds of affectees were still camping under open skies. Within the camps, sanitation was a growing concern which will have to be addressed immediately if outbreaks are to be prevented. Of course, all of this is being reported heavily in the media - but there is a real sense of scale and urgency when you see this first hand."
